Grading Requirements

The grading requirements listed below for children acts as a guideline only. Instructors are able to use their discretion as to what a child should be capable of at a certain level taking into account the child's age. However, by the time the child is due to test for Junior Black Belt, they must have acquired all of the knowledge as shown below up to and including the knowledge for Junior 1st Duan.

The various Sash colours in Kung Fu symbolize the Mind set stages of the practitioner.

It’s a circle of life.

The longer you practice Kung Fu, the more you’ll see yourself changing and growing.


The belt colours tell a story…  Of life, growth & advancement.


From the beginning and/or birth (white belt) to the intermediate parts of development (orange, green, blue etc.) to maturing and going beyond (purple, brown, black belt).

The belts symbolize your progress as an individual – both inside & outside the kwoon.

  

White Sash

  • The student starts their journey, he/ she opens their mind to new information. The white symbolizes a white page on which knowledge will be added.

Yellow Sash 

  • The student starts to discover the art, he is exposed to some basic knowledge, and his interest grows. Yellow is the colour of light, which invokes the first rays of sunshine.

Orange Sash

  • The student now possesses some knowledge, his skills increase, as well as his desire to improve even more. The orange colour symbolizes energy and enthusiasm. 

Green Sash

  • The student acquires more maturity, his body and mind take shape. Green invokes the colour of nature, and life.

Blue Sash

  • The student learns to master better his body and mind. Blue is the colour of calm, and symbolizes comprehension.

Purple Sash

  • The student now possesses efficient techniques, and his confidence of reaching the higher levels increases. Purple is associated to power and ambition.

 Brown Sash 

  • The student now has the skills, and the maturity to understand the value of efforts invested. Brown symbolizes seriousness, and responsibility.

 Black Sash

  • The student now knows the techniques and is able to apply them. He then searches for deeper understanding of the art through practice and contribution. Black is the colour of authority, and mystery.

Red Sash

  • The student dedicates himself to the art by teaching to the next generation. He is now a teacher, but he is still, and forever a student. Red symbolizes energy, courage and confidence.
